IRISH CANOEIST

MULTIPLE MEDALS – WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP & CUP, EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP MEDAL

My name is Jenny Egan and I am an Irish International Canoeist with multiple World Championship medals, a European Championship medal and multiple World Cup medals. I am the only Irish athlete female or male to date to win an International Canoe Federation (ICF) Senior Canoe Sprint World Championship medal, a Senior Canoe Sprint European Championship medal and ICF Senior Canoe Sprint World Cup medals. I am also currently ranked Number 1 in the World in the ICF Senior Women’s K1 5000m. In 2019, I won my fourth Irish Times and Sport Ireland Sportswoman of the Month Award.

I have a passion for increasing visibility of Women in Sport and I am on the Sport Ireland Women in Sport Steering Committee as the only athlete representative. I also have an expanding interest in media and broadcasting having been a guest on many radio and TV shows. In addition to this, I had been selected as one of only 20 females to represent the 20×20 Campaign in 2020.

Jenny Egan on Education and Women In Sport
Many athletes spend hours a day training for their sport. Even facing the opportunity that it could transform into a career, Egan stresses the importance of getting an education and finding other avenues to travel down in the future. Athletes always risk injury or an unexpected retirement from their sport, and it is important to have something else to do. “You’re not always going to be an athlete,” she said.
